What is Dental Sedation?

happy male patient in dental officeDental sedation a type of medication that can be administered in several different ways to help you relax during procedures. Although some sedation options allow you to remain awake, you may feel so relaxed that you fall asleep. Other methods cause you to sleep completely.

The goal for sedation is to provide you with a relaxing and anxiety-free experience while undergoing care at our office.

What Kind of Treatment Can I Get?

We can use sedation to deliver comprehensive treatment plans in a single day. Total relaxation treatment is especially useful when fixing a broken or severely damaged tooth with a CEREC same-day crown.

With sedation, we can help maximize your comfort while performing the following:

  • Placing dental implants
  • Restoring missing teeth
  • Laser gum disease treatment
  • Bone grafts
  • Placing veneers
  • And much more!

What Sedation Options Do You Offer?

Dr. Perry provides sedation options designed to ease you safely into a state of complete relaxation. Our available options include:

  • Oral Conscious Sedation
  • IV Sedation

How Does Sedation Work?

Beautiful woman getting sedation at dental clinicWe often provide oral conscious sedation option in pill form. Typically, the medication is taken about an hour before your procedure. Although you are still awake, it will make you drowsy. Relaxation levels with oral conscious sedation can vary from minimal to moderate, depending on the dose we give you.

Moderate relaxation requires a larger dose. This is the most common form of sedation. You may become relaxed enough to fall asleep during your procedure. However, we can typically wake you with a gentle shake after treatment.

IV sedation involves administering the medication through a vein, which works much faster. This method allows Dr. Perry to adjust your sedation level continuously when needed.

Who is Dental Sedation For?

Dental sedation can be an ideal option for those with the following:

  • High levels of anxiety & fear
  • Traumatic past dental experiences
  • Problems with local anesthetics
  • Sensitive gag reflexes
  • Fear of shots and needles
  • Dislike of the noises, smells, and tastes associated with dental care

Sedation may not be suitable for everyone. You must let our team know if you have conditions like heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. Informing us about your current health and history allows our team to administer sedation safely.

What Can I Expect When Receiving Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation is taken before your procedure. We recommend that you have a friend or family member drive you to and from our office. Once you arrive, you’ll likely feel completely relaxed and ready to undergo your procedure.

While you may still be aware and can respond during treatment, you often have no recollection afterward. This lack of memory can help you cope with dental-related anxieties over time with repeated successful treatments.

For IV sedation, our dentist administers the medication once you’re in the dental chair. Because IV sedation is the strongest option, you should expect to have no memory of your procedure itself. You may be slightly drowsy following your sedation. However, your drowsiness should decrease several hours after treatment.

What to Expect After Your Appointment

Once home, Dr. Perry recommends that you relax and take it easy for the rest of the day. Refrain from exercising and doing other strenuous activities. Try taking a nap or binge-watching your favorite show. You should be fine enjoying a light meal an hour or two afterward.

Is Dental Sedation Safe?

Like other procedures, there is always some level of risk with sedation. However, when provided by a skilled team, it is safe. At Perry Dental Health, we highly recommend asking questions and voicing your concerns to us. We do all we can to ensure we administer sedation in the safest way possible.
